The VOICE reading series kicks off tonight, Thursday, September 24 at 7:30pm at the Krannert Museum of Art.

Fang Lijun Discusses His Work as part of the Jerrold Ziff Distinguished Lecture on Modern Art.
Fang Lijun, born in 1963 in Handan, Hebei province is one of the leading and most influential contemporary artists in China. Fang Lijun received a BA from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing in 1990 – he currently lives and works out of Beijing and exhibits both nationally and internationally, working primarily in oil painting or woodblock prints.

Session II of a symposium on “Painting in the Twenty-First Century”
While painting is ubiquitous, its terms are more elastic than ever, with artists working between and among disparate kinds of practices and eschewing traditional notions of the medium. Given the wide range of projects that constellate around painting today, what does it mean to choose paint as one’s material and to self-identify as a painter? How varied are contemporary practices and how has the art pedagogy that subtends them changed? How does the way we teach painting transform the nature of painting as well as the ways in which we see, teach, and write about it. What role does criticism play in teaching painting? How different are teaching practices internationally and in what ways do regional practices share common ground? For instance,China has become an important source of painting in the last decade, a fact not unrecognized by the art market. How have the teaching-methods in China changed and what impact has this transformation had on what is happening in China and elsewhere? And regarding the economic situation more broadly, what spaces for critical discourse exist in this context? These are some of the issues that the symposium will address, beginning with the case study of China today then broadening to practices elsewhere, including the United States.

KAM: WOW Design Series
A new exhibit featuring the work of designer Marloes ten Bhömer opens today at the Krannert Museum of Art.
The exhibition is part of the WOW design series, which KAM started because:
Ten Bhömer's experiments with the design and production of women's shoes, according to the KAM website, "offers new aesthetic and structural possibilities while critiquing the conventional status of women's shoes as cultural objects."
This is an exciting opportunity to see Ten Bhömer's design process from start to finish.
The exhibit runs Jan. 30 - May 31, 2009. For more information visit KAM's website.

We live in an environment that is hyperconscious of design...While this atmosphere is certainly exciting, the crowded marketplace makes the work of truly inspired and innovative designers even more difficult to recognize. As consumers and viewers, we are too rarely WOWed. This series of exhibitions seeks out that WOW factor. Each featured designer creates remarkable products through a transparent design process inspired by everyday visual icons, and pushes the quintessential into uncharted territory.

Comics (etc.) at Krannert Art Museum
Last week, the exhibition Out of Sequence: Underrepresented Voices in American Comics opened at Krannert Art Museum to a crowd of nearly 500 folks. The exhibition seeks to showcase American sequential art that steps outside the traditional bounds of the medium by focusing on historical and contemporary women and minority comic creators as well as work created with nontraditional techniques.
Events of interest related to the exhibition include a gallery conversation with co-curators Damian Duffy and John Jennings (Thursday, October 30, 5:30 pm),
and a talk entitled, "Emerging Out of Sequence: Examining the Past and Charting the Future of American Comics" with exhibitors Nancy Goldstein, Andrei Molotiu, Trina Robbins, and Ashley A. Woods (Saturday, November 8, 1-4 pm).
